REGULATION OF THE BODY’S ENERGY REQUIRMENTS
Nutrition has become a fundamental aspect of our lives. Today Man enjoys an enormous variation in foods, but unfortunately “over eating” and “incorrect eating” have become serious medical problems with long term complications. It has therefore become increasingly necessary to regulate our food intake to satisfy the minimum requirements of the body without producing the “disease of excess”, namely, overweight.
To live a healthy life, the energy needs of the body must be satisfied. The body’s total energy requirement is the sum of the energy needed to maintain life, i.e., basal metabolism, together with that energy necessary for additional activities, for example, household chores, and sport. The energy wants increase with activity, with maximum increases during exercises by as much as 600 to 800% over basal metabolism. There will therefore be considerable changes in energy needs over a 24 hour period. Energy is measured in kilojoules. Food will provide the necessary kilojoules.
When evaluating the kilojoule content of a diet, consideration must be given to the following.
